Move It, Move It, Move It!
Happy New Year Everyone! Here we go again with those New Year’s resolutions that tend to last for about a week and then they just fizzle out. I know, we really do have good intentions, but those resolutions just never seem to last for any length of time.
For the past month, it seems like every day on television someone has been talking about the importance of walking. They suggest that by walking only one half hour a day the benefits are numerous. Now, they aren’t talking about a stroll down the street doing some window shopping; they’re talking about a nice brisk walk. A walk where you would find it a little difficult to talk – you know, get that heart rate up.
Recently, I was at a seminar and the keynote speaker was Dr. Roizen. He wrote a couple of books with Dr. Oz; you may have seen them on the Oprah show. He says a minimum of 10,000 steps a day with 30 minutes set aside for that brisk walk. If time doesn’t permit a thirty minute walk, then three, ten minute walks a day would be extremely beneficial. So come on, it’s a new year, a new attitude, and a new you! Naturally, you always want to check with your physician to make sure you aren’t going against anything he or she would want; but in most cases, this would probably be the minimum amount of time they would want you to spend walking.
This is your life and nothing is more important than you! You didn’t go through surgery for fun! You had the surgery to make positive changes in your life. Put yourself on top of the “to do” list and move it, move it, move it! I believe your surgeon does a great job, but once he or she is finished, then it is up to you to take responsibility for yourself and replace those old habits with good, positive new ones!
