We bariatric professionals have the good fortune to be involved in patient care at a very exciting time in the history of weight loss surgery and lifestyle enhancement. Â I felt this positive vibe yesterday at the Walk from Obesity, Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Riverside Park on the West Side of New York City. Â The event was attended by a variety of people, professionals and patients (or potential patients) alike. Â There was excellent product and service support from many bariatric industry saavy businesses at the core of bariatric patient care and long term maintenance success.
Focus 28 Wellness has an incredible gift and force of nature named Laura Preston who was the keynote speaker at the Walk. Â She is a gastric bypass patient of Dr. Philip Weber and our program, New York Bariatrics, from 2004. Â Laura now travels the country as a motivational speaker and representative of Focus 28 and all of the products and services they offer that support a bariatric friendly lifestyle. Â She had the crowded captivated by her energetic, yet graceful presence. Â As the Walk began, the motivation and commitment was all around us and spurred us on, the hundreds of us at the event, to be one movement toward a healthier and greater quality of life.
Again, the bariatric community of professionals is providing better care and guidance than ever. Â Do your research and find a bariatric program that is right for you. Â Then be sure to follow up with bariatric positive support service, medical follow-up dietary recommendations with exercise and bariatric friendly foods and supplements that are found right here on www.focus28wellness.com/lori

From apples to oranges, Cheetos to 100-calorie snack packs, protein bars to protein shakes, there are a wide array of snack items to choose from. Â Many of my patients are confused when they read through their education packets that they must stick to three fixed meals per day following weight loss surgery. Â This contradicts preceding weight loss tips of six small meals. Â The patients come to me frantically looking for answers. Â
The Random House dictionary defines a snack as

Truth is sometimes painfulFact: Obesity rates are soaring in the U.S.
Fact: Obesity is already having an adverse impact on young people
Fact: Most people still do not practice healthy behaviours that can prevent obesity
Fact: Obesity-related costs place a huge burden on the U.S. economy
Studying statistics sometimes can be like at a glass half-empty. Unless the reports give you great results, statistics give a cold, hard look on the reality that we live in. Obesity is a disease. It interferes with physical activity. It robs you of life’s simple pleasures. So take one last look at the facts and make sure it stays permanently etched in your memory. It may sound like a cruel and unusual punishment, but this will serve as your motivation. Obesity may be a disease, but unlike diseases like cystic fibrosis, obesity is preventable.
Measuring up to the irony of life
You’ve search endless roads that could potentially lead to that light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, liquid diets and moderate exericising hasn’t been as successful as you anticipated. Through mindless chatter, you hear bariatric surgery’s melodic voice ringing in your ears. Your neighbourhood-friendly Google has now enforced the certitude that yes, you’ve finally found the solution to all your problems. Or not. You see, there are requirements to bariatric surgery. Ironically, as if your weight wasn’t a problem enough, you have to be a specifically overweight; a BMI of 40 or higher to be exact. Not only that, but you must also deliver a convincing speech on the efforts you have given in order to tweek those lifelong habits you’ve been nursing. This may seem a little overly dramatic but bariatric surgery demands your full attention. Sometimes in order to get full attention, dramatics do the trick.

Stepping up
Lose weight. Get fit. Build muscle. Eat healthy. Get stronger, faster, and leaner. After all, isn’t that what fitness is all about…? With so many new, exciting ways to get fit, it’s hardly something one would consider demanding. So why does the World Health Organization predict 2.3 billion overweight adults in the world by 2015 and more than 700 million of them being obese? Truth of the matter is that although shocking, this statement unfortunately comes as no surprise. With an increase in fast food, labour-saving devices, motorised transport and more available

Last week she lost an additional 2.5 pounds, isn’t that  fantastic!  And her body fat % went down .5 %. What is even more impressive is that she attended a family wedding  (cocktail hour, her weakness), her sister’s birthday cake celebration and had considerable deadline stress at work.  With all of these obstacles in her way, she accomplished this 2.5 lb weight loss. Needless to say, we all have challenges and some days are more challenging than others. Point being, if a week goes by that you hit a plateau or if you continue to lose weight towards your goal always consider that maintenance is also a super celebration. Often times when things get stressful in our lives, we lose the delicate balance of calories in calories out, exercise priority, meditation and self-preservation. In this case, my client lost an additional 2.5 pounds. However, after I congratulated her, I emphasized the importance of understanding  & appreciating where you are at and not becoming ego dependant on the scale’s reading. She walked away with a smile from ear to ear and said ” Thanks!  But I hope I don’t hit a plateau next week”. Of course, I reassured her and said “Don’t worry if you do I will be sure to increase the intensity and duration of your workout” and then I reminded her  “don’t eat white at night”(as in bread, rice, potato, pasta) She said, “Can I have red wine instead of white?” I smiled and said, “Make better choices and stay focused!” Until next check in.
Well, I hope one day she decides to share her success story.  She said she would share her photos when she reaches her goal. Although, last week she said after she read my “beautiful at any weight blog ” she is considering sharing photos before she reaches her goal. Either way,  when she is ready, I will ask her for a before and after photo.

Healthy body, healthy mind
Bariatric surgery addresses the physical aspect of your weight loss program. Potentially, if you stick to all the guidelines appointed by your surgeon, you could lose as much as half of your excess weight. Pretty exciting, isn’t it? Unfortunately, even though your surgery has given you a passport to a life free of obesity, the psychological portion of weight loss surgery is not addressed. Strict eating habits won’t take away the fear of gaining the weight back. A medicine cabinet full of vitamin supplements won’t take care of that feeling of confusion, as if you’re walking in somebody else’s shoes. Incorporating daily exercise in your normal routine won’t replace the frustration you might encounter when not reaching your high expectations. You have to understand that tackling the psychological issues is just as important as developing good habits. It’s all in your mind.
Mind over matter
It’s unfortunate to say that we do live in a
