The Law of Attraction

Why is it that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? Why are some people considered lucky while others suffer? How does one person have the ability to turn everything they touch into gold, while another can’t catch a break? The answer is very simple. It is all in our minds and where we focus our attention, either positive or negative.

There are laws that exist in the Universe and they apply to each and every one of us.  On Earth we have the law of gravity. It does not matter who you are, if you throw a ball up into the air, it will eventually come down. We are also governed by Universal laws. One of these laws is The Law of Attraction. Whatever we focus our attention on expands. We receive what we think about, whether we want it or not. Our life experiences are based on our thoughts and beliefs on any subject. The thoughts we think over and over again eventually become a belief and become evident in our daily experiences. So, it all begins with our minds.

Personal empowerment comes from knowing that you are the creator of your own experience. It is being in alignment with the Universal Law and allowing those laws to work with you to create your ideal life. It is having mastery over your mind. If it is true (and it has been proven that it is) that the thoughts you think will eventually create your reality, is it not vital to pay attention to your thoughts and change the thoughts that are disempowering?  You are the one in control of your own mind. By being in alignment with the positive aspects of your life and focusing on what makes you feel good, the Universe will bring you more positive life experiences. Think positive thoughts, and have positive feelings, and you will have positive experiences. Think negative thoughts, or feel worry, doubt, fear, resentment, jealousy, contentment, rage, anger, or disappointment and you will draw in more negative life experiences. If you feel fat, you can’t attract being thin. Is it really that simple?  Absolutely!  Don’t believe a word I say, just apply the law and experience it for yourself.

Can you believe, the Chinese have been using acupuncture and herbs for over 5,000 years?  It is used extensively for a variety of medical purposes ranging from the prevention and treatment of disease, to relieving pain and anesthetizing patients for surgery.  As in many oriental medicine practices, the emphasis of acupuncture is on prevention.  In traditional Chinese medicine, the highest form of acupuncture was given to enable you to live a long, healthy life.

Move It, Move It, Move It!

Happy New Year Everyone!  Here we go again with those New Year’s resolutions that tend to last for about a week and then they just fizzle out.  I know, we really do have good intentions, but those resolutions just never seem to last for any length of time.

For the past month, it seems like every day on television someone has been talking about the importance of walking.  They suggest that by walking only one half hour a day the benefits are numerous.  Now, they aren’t talking about a stroll down the street doing some window shopping; they’re talking about a nice brisk walk.  A walk where you would find it a little difficult to talk – you know, get that heart rate up.

Recently, I was at a seminar and the keynote speaker was Dr. Roizen.  He wrote a couple of books with Dr. Oz; you may have seen them on the Oprah show.  He says a minimum of 10,000 steps a day with 30 minutes set aside for that brisk walk.  If time doesn’t permit a thirty minute walk, then three, ten minute walks a day would be extremely beneficial.  So come on, it’s a new year, a new attitude, and a new you!  Naturally, you always want to check with your physician to make sure you aren’t going against anything he or she would want; but in most cases, this would probably be the minimum amount of time they would want you to spend walking.

This is your life and nothing is more important than you!  You didn’t go through surgery for fun!  You had the surgery to make positive changes in your life.  Put yourself on top of the “to do” list and move it, move it, move it!  I believe your surgeon does a great job, but once he or she is finished, then it is up to you to take responsibility for yourself and replace those old habits with good, positive new ones!

Gear up for the New Year

Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking at a post op bariatric support group meeting.  It really was wonderful to see so many people that not only reached their goal, but maintained it.  The people that have maintained their weight, years after their surgery continue to follow their doctor’s guidelines and understand it is a lifestyle change.  They have stayed loyal to their exercise program with workouts that fit their lifestyle, such as; playing tennis, swimming, dancing, aerobics, yoga, pilates, walking and resistance training, to name a few.  Unfortunately, there were some people at the meeting that had either gained some weight or were fearful that they would.

If you read my article in the last issue, it was about how your thoughts become your reality.   It is really important for anyone that has gained back some weight to evaluate what they are or aren’t doing on a daily basis.  We can be quite creative with excuses as to why things aren’t working; but we really do know how we are sabotaging ourselves.  Use the Holiday time to get back on track. When you go to Holiday parties, make good food choices.  You can still be social, without going off your program.  Get your mind to move out of where you are stuck right now and focus on where you want to be. See it, feel it, and write down what you want to achieve, write it as if you have already achieved it and read it every day!

Every practice is different, but if your practice has you on a specific food and exercise program, are you following it?  If your practice doesn’t have a nutritionist, exercise physiologist, psychiatrist and hypnotist on staff, do some research and find these professionals on your own to assist you in achieving your goals.  Help is available for you, but you need to reach out, take the first step, and admit you need some assistance.  It is always best if your chosen healthcare professional has worked with bariatric patients.

Make it easy for yourself.  Start with one thing at a time.  Perhaps you want to plan a weekly menu.  Perhaps you want to find an exercise buddy or locate a support group in your area.  Whatever it may be, it is up to you to take that first step.  You can do it, I know you can.

Wishing you the very best for the Holiday Season and a very Happy New Year!
