Facts About Obesity

Filed under: Lisa Avellino - Focus28 Fitness Expert, Reflections, Doctor's Corner, Fitness, Obesity Research, Nutrition, Focus28 Experts Blog — Focus 28 Team @ 7:00 am

As I read these facts from the National Institute of Health I realized that movement is easy when you are inspired. After reading this list I printed this for my clients and they were motivated to prevent the being part of an obesity statistic. Somehow when you read the list in print walking an extra 1000 steps seems easy. Just increasing your duration of walking can make a difference. Make your own positive affirmation list and read it often when your motivation wanes. Always remember that inspired action make you move effortlessly-inspired action = your perfect weight. So, focus on your perfect weight, inspire your self and stay centered on your personal goals!

Exercise for Obese People - Exercising on Your Own

Filed under: Image, Lisa Avellino - Focus28 Fitness Expert, Fitness, Focus28 Experts Blog — Focus 28 Team @ 7:00 am

Recumbent Bikes and Cross-Trainers

Recumbent bikes are great for people who need support while they exercise. One of the newest products on the market is the recumbent bike which offers an alternative to endless pedaling. This machine is more like a stepper than a bike and it allows you to work your upper body and lower body at the same time without stressing your joints. It accommodates a variety of body types and sizes and holds up to 400 pounds.

Exercise Ball

If you spend any time at my site, you know how much I love exercise balls. I use them with all my clients, but really enjoy using them with my obese clients to help them work on balance, stability and abdominal strength. Some of the basic exercises you can try include sitting on the ball (try watching TV for a while and you’ll feel your body working a little harder than usual), marching or balancing by lifting one foot off the floor, hold and then lift the other foot.

Portable Peddler

I like using this because it is inexpensive, does not take up a lot of room and you can do it while sitting on a sofa or chair. I use a pedal exerciser much like this with one of my clients and she gets a great cardio workout without having to try to maneuver herself onto the recumbent bike. They do have some fancier models out there, but this one works just as well and you can adjust the tension to make it easier or harder to pedal. With my client, I simply have her pedal for as long as she can, rest and then repeat 5 or more times.

Pedometer

If walking is your exercise of choice, a pedometer can be very motivating. One of my clients spends much of her daylight hours sitting in front of a computer at work. Though she did great in her personal training sessions, it was hard to get her to be more active in her daily life. Of course there is scientific and medical information that supports the benefit of 10, 00 steps a day. However, the reconditioned market should literally take it one step at a time. That is why I recommend tracking progress. When you see the increase in #s your own success becomes the best inspiration. Many of my clients are amazed that if they track the first week and struggle with 500 step averages a day, the second week is effortless to double that number. More important than sitting one client’s improvement is to better understand your own body. I believe everyone has there own endurance development blueprint/footprint so to speak. No 2 clients are alike. Never take the generic approach to fitness.

The best 3 tips:
1) expect results
2) visualize your best healthy weight
3) appreciate any and all efforts day by day

Susan, a mother of 2, 5 feet 1 inch, 37 years old weighed in today at 267 pounds
her average step count is 678 steps after wearing her pedometer for 3 days

I will keep you posted on her progress.

Your Budget In The Gym

Filed under: Lisa Avellino - Focus28 Fitness Expert, Fitness, Focus28 Experts Blog — Focus 28 Team @ 7:00 am

When it comes to exercise fitness centers, costs can add up quickly. It can be a good idea to decide on a budget for exercise and any related expenses prior to looking for a facility to join.If you are tight on funds, see if there are any places you may be able to cut back a bit in order to make a gym membership possible. Sometimes all you need is a slight budget adjustment in order to free up some funds for fitness. Also, check into low-frills facilities, such as some of the all-women gyms. Many tend to offer rates that are fairly inexpensive.

Comparison shopping is another way to find a gym that matches your budget needs. Call around for prices, ask friends for information and keep an eye open for special membership deals. Some places offer the same specials each year, while others vary them based on membership availability.

If you have a job outside the home, you may also want to check fitness centers around your place of employment to see what their rates are as well.Keep an eye out for hidden costs. Some places charge an annual membership fee in addition to monthly dues. Some may not include exercise classes in the cost of membership. Make sure you know what the package entails before signing up as a member, just to be on the safe side.

The bottom line is it is not just what you can afford it is truly what you value. May I suggest setting a budget for a fitness membership and then find the perfect setting to get you fitter and motivated! 4 quick tips: skip-rope-big.jpg

1) Visit the gym; be sure it is close to home or work

2) Check to see if your insurance will pay for it or if the facility offers a corporate or     group discount.

3) Be absolutely clear about what it includes

4) Use it or as I always say” sweat once a day!!

Exercising After Having Bariatric Surgery

Filed under: Lisa Avellino - Focus28 Fitness Expert, Fitness, Focus28 Experts Blog — Focus 28 Team @ 9:00 am

Once someone has decided to go through with a Bariatric surgery they also have to make lifestyle changes. This is because the procedure by itself will not fully allow patients to lose weight. It is one of the tools that will help in the weight-loss journey. Lifestyle changes have to be made. If old eating habits remain along with no exercise, there may not even be any weight loss at all. No one that goes through an optional major surgery wants minimal results as an outcome. This is why lifestyle changes are extremely important.

Exercise is one of the major lifestyle changes that must occur. Any type of exercise is beneficial, but one that is rhythmic and steady for 20 to 30 minutes per day is the best choice. The main long-term goal should be to exercise up at least 30 minutes per day, five to six times each week. This can be reached by simply going for a walk around the neighborhood or a local park. Creating a chart of how many minutes per day have been walked is a good tool in keeping track of the total amounts so that exercise goals can be reached. weights1.jpg

Other types of exercises that help assist in weight-loss are aerobics and various sports. It is wise to ask the doctor when it is safe to begin such activities. It is very important to at least do a little exercise soon after the surgery and eventually build the amount to 30 minutes. This is crucial because when a Bariatric procedure is done the body has fewer food calories since the patient eats less. This can turn into burning unused tissues which includes muscle. Not only will the person lose muscle mass, they also will lose strength. When exercising, the body is forced to burn the fat instead of muscle which assists in reaching the optimal weight-loss results.

Many patients are leery to exercise right after surgery. It is common to wait two weeks post-surgery. Fortunately there are exercise specialists that can assist in setting appropriate plans. The specialist will be able to offer beneficial exercises and help the patient stay motivated. The key to remember is to listen to the body. Once the body feels worn and tired it is alright to stop and try again at a later time. This is so the body does not get hurt.

Exercise has never been more important than for patients of a Bariatric surgery. It is a challenge worth tackling since the positive results are plentiful. Not only does it assist in weight-loss, but it also changes the person’s altogether health for the better.

Yoga and Meditation to Speed Up The Weight Loss Process!

Filed under: Empowerment, Lisa Avellino - Focus28 Fitness Expert, Fitness — Laura @ 9:00 am

Why do so many celebrities, athletes and people do yoga,–because it affects every area of ones life and can affectively help maintain ones weight too!

Ashtanga Yoga, or power yoga, is a specific set of poses that are linked together without pausing, providing an excellent whole body workout.

Bikram Yoga, or ‘hot yoga’, is performed in a heated room; the interplay between yoga breathing and weight loss occurs because the extra body heat generated burns off more calories.                                      Yoga

Other less intense styles of yoga don’t help so much with burning calories, but are an excellent complementary tool to aerobic exercise and a healthy eating plan. How they complement other weight loss tools is outlined below.

The deep-breathing involved in yoga increase oxygen intake to all body cells; this in turn increases oxidation and burning of fat cells. Another direct benefit of yoga exercises is that, when combined with yoga breathing, weight loss is made easier because as well as burning off energy the exercises also store energy that is ready to be burned instead of stored.

Learning to breathe more effectively through yoga can also be extremely beneficial when applied to aerobic exercise. Oxygen intake is maximized, and the speed at which carbon dioxide exits the body is slowed; this allows you to exercise more efficiently, and not get “puffed” so easily.  Another benefit is that deep breathing is known to improve mental strength and concentration; anything that can improve will-power can only be a good thing! There are deep-breathing exercises designed specifically for weight loss, but these need to be used with caution. They can be effective in the short-term, but used as a long-term measure they may disharmonize the body, mind and spirit.

Staying Focused, Forever!

Filed under: Reflections, Empowerment, Lisa Avellino - Focus28 Fitness Expert, Fitness, Nutrition, Focus28 Experts Blog — Laura @ 9:00 am

OprahLike Oprah expressing her personal story with gaining the weight back, what  can we do to get back on track and stay focused forever?

If you’re trying to lose weight or get in shape, you may find yourself losing interest a few weeks into your program. If you’re struggling to stick with your weight loss or exercise program, read on to learn where the focus and motivation has gone and how to get it back.

Most people fail at their fitness goals because they’re waiting for something spectacular to happen. Losing weight isn’t always a spectacular process…in fact; it isn’t even a continuous process sometimes. What you may find is that you lose a little, gain a little and hit a plateau repeat the process again and again.

There are no short cuts to weight loss, so, even if you’re frustrated that your body hasn’t changed, do not give up! If you’re burning more calories than you eat, your body is changing, even if it’s slower than you’d like. Make sure your goals are realistic and, most importantly, that you give your body the time it needs to respond to what you’re doing.

SETTING REALISTIC FITNESS GOALS! GET PUMPED!

Maybe it’ll be difficult to replicate the excitement you felt on January 1 when you were so ready to lose that weight or gain that muscle. But, you can get a little more fired up by going back to your original goal and remembering why you set it in the first place. What are you trying to accomplish? Remind yourself that what you do today has everything to do with where you’ll be in 6 months.

Snowbound and it’s the Holiday Season Too!

Filed under: Reflections, Empowerment, Lisa Avellino - Focus28 Fitness Expert, Fitness, Nutrition, Focus28 Experts Blog — Laura @ 9:00 am

Weight gain during the holiday season seems to be an acceptable and average American experience. Although we are aware of the side affects of weight gain, and agree the number one New Year’s resolution is to lose weight, why does it still happen?

Well, let’s first agree that an ounce of prevention is equal to a pound of cure. Meaning, as Pat Reilly would say “THE BEST OFFENSE IS A GOOD DEFENSE”. The last few days in New York have been cold and snowy, more than 6 inches total. So, instead of feeling stressed due to the lack of activity and being limited to the indoor, why not simply plan ahead.

I suggest creating a section in your home that is specifically set up for exercise and stretching. Have your journal on hand to record your sets, repetitions and mini walk cycles. Instead of just catching up with friends on the phone, try using the speakerphone and marching in place or walking on the treadmill. There is actually a new treadmill called the Treaddesk that has been introduced to many offices to have their employees walk slowly while working at their desk.

Of course, the other side of the equation is nutrition. So, plan ahead by having high quality, no sugar snacks in the house. Try pineapple, green apples or low calorie protein bars or soup. Let’s commit to indoor exercise, healthy snacking, hydration, meditation and goal setting during a snowstorm.

Yes, breaking old habits can be difficult, but trying something new can be exciting. Instead of just baking, try creating a new dish that is low in calories and taste great too. My favorite dessert to prepare for my family is a healthy brownie. Instead of using sugar, I substitute a mashed banana and applesauce for the butter and sugar.

So, the next time the weather man said a winter storm is on the way, be sure to stock up on the right ingredients for your new healthy baking and cooking, call old friends while exercising indoors and why not catch up on journaling too!

Follow Up Week 9 - My Clients Success

Filed under: Patient Profile, Weight Loss Success Story, Empowerment, Reflections, Lisa Avellino - Focus28 Fitness Expert, Psychology, Fitness, Focus28 Experts Blog — Laura @ 9:00 am

“I had a major anxiety attack” she said. “I do not want to weigh in this week”. I said, “Okay, do you want to discuss it? “Not really, but I will”, she said. So, there is no update on the weight in side because she did not want to see the damage she had done.

She said she had over eaten. “I told myself I would be good. Then Pandora’s box was opened. The food drug started when I tasted the stuffing, then the sweet potato pie, then I had a serving of every pie. I don’t know why this happened but it did. I suppose the wonderful feelings from childhood, the smell, the taste were all just overwhelming. Then, dinner that lasted for hours. I said I would never eat again. Unfortunately, I was hungry 3 hours later and I ate again.”

She explained to me that the worst part was that next day her rings did not fit, her shoes were tight and she felt sick. She also explained that she understood that this was not a good thing. Over eating actually hurt. She went on and on…

My thoughts: love your self today, drink water, exercise and take it one day at a time. Remember, the average person gains between 5 and 15 pounds during the holiday season. An ounce of cure is equal to a pound of prevention, as the saying goes. So, let’s begin today and be more guarded to protect the focused weight loss that we achieved in the last several weeks.

Here are some tips:

1 - Plan ahead, doesn’t go to a party feeling hungry and know your limit before arriving.

2 - Don’t drink alcohol, drinking is a high calorie, non nutritious and often makes you feel uninhibited about overeating.

3 -Add extra exercise, start the day in a calorie deficit so if you try a dessert, (the 3 bite rule please) you will have already burned it off.

4 - Focus on friends, family, conversation, helping in the kitchen, laughter, not the buffet table.

5 - Often it is not the day of that is the problem, it is the day after. When you over eat the body wants more. When you eat sugar you crave sugar. So, be careful about the day after rule, the taste is over on the 2nd day.

6 - Don’t indulge in eggnog, high calorie punch and high fat sauces. The extras really add up

7 - Get a head start on your 2009 New Year’s resolution–why wait…

8 - Stay focused in the now! Thanksgiving is over. This is a season of celebration, joy and happiness.

9 - Weigh in to manage your weight, like in business; what is not measured cannot be managed. It is important to weigh in weekly, no guess work, let’s not skip the weigh in with our eyes closed then weigh in on January 1, 2009.

10 - When shopping, park further away, take the step not the escalator/elevator, lift the shopping bags for bicep curls and do isometric squeezes when you are on line waiting to check out. It all adds up to a great workout!

Until next week—

Happy healthy, holiday season to you and your family!!!

Follow Up Week 8 - My Clients Success

Filed under: Patient Profile, Weight Loss Success Story, Reflections, Lisa Avellino - Focus28 Fitness Expert, Fitness, Focus28 Experts Blog — Laura @ 9:00 am

This is amazing, Another 3.5 pounds lost this week. Combine that with last week and that is a total of 8 pounds in 2 weeks. This is when it gets really exciting. Just like when you are gaining weight, the weight seems to just creep up until one day when things don’t fit or feel comfortable anymore. The reverse is also true. The point is that weight loss is cumulative. Lose 1 pound then 2, then, 3, then 4.5, then zero, then 1 and so on. The numbers start to really add up. Just like a savings account, an Ira or any day by day goal. Always have a positive affirmation list to refer to when your motivation is low and, be sure to update it when you are on a “good week”. I always say the body is a work of art in progress.

Try not to become ego dependant on a number, as in the scale. Remember to measure your body with a tape and check your BMI. These numbers give you additional information about your personal living sculpture - your body. Always know that everyday you can redesign, tweak, lift, tone, reduce or increase any section of your body.

Happy sculpting and congrats on a super, super 2 week weight loss!!!

Follow Up Week 7 - My Clients Success

Filed under: Weight Loss Success Story, Patient Profile, Lisa Avellino - Focus28 Fitness Expert, Fitness, Focus28 Experts Blog — Laura @ 9:00 am

It is amazing when you least expect it the weight seems to just melt off with out trying. When you flip the switch from weight gain to weight loss the weight seems to come off effortlessly. This week was a huge success— 4 and 1/2 pound loss was the actual weigh in. I highly recommend celebrating when you lose weight. In the past when she was celebrating it generally centered on food. Like a brownie or an ice cream sundae. The best celebration is to just appreciate yourself, your efforts and your new regained energy. Like the saying goes “STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES”.

Instead of Celebrating with food, try this:

  • A BODY MASSAGE
  • A MANICURE
  • A PEDICURE
  • A NEW OUTFIT
  • A THANK YOU NOTE “TO YOUR SELF”
  • AN ENTRY IN YOUR JOURNAL
  • A WALK IN THE PARK
  • A MEDITATION
  • A YOGA CLASS
  • A_____________

You Fill in the blank. The point is; we must try to get away from those old habits of celebrating and centering it on food. When you have, or go to a party, try to focus on friends, a great conversation or just appreciate the laughter. I did not say it would be easy, but, i did say you are worth it!

Until the next weigh in.

Have a healthy day!!!
